The Bauhaus is often regarded as the birthplace of western Modernism. However, its first exhibition outside of Germany took place not in France, the USA, or the Netherlands – but in India, of all places. The background to the 1922 exhibition in Calcutta has not yet been fully clarified, and an exhibition in Dessau is investigating the story of this unusual artistic encounter. New York was ‘the most exciting city on earth’, according to Andreas Feininger – and an exhibition in the Masters’ Houses estate in Dessau is impressively demonstrating this with his ‘New York in the Forties’ photo series. From 24 February to 21 April, the exhibition is presenting a selection of some 90 works by the photographer and Bauhaus student.

In April 1927 Florence Henri came to the Bauhaus in Dessau. Lucia Moholy und László Moholy-Nagy inspired her to start taking photographs. After returning to Paris Henri decided to take up photography as a profession and ceased painting pictures.

The sublime ship motif in the Kornhaus

The maritime quality of the Kornhaus, built in Dessau in 1930 by the architect Carl Fieger, only becomes clear to the viewer at second glance: the stretched length of the architectural body, and the originally light colour of its façade, initially suggest the shape of a ship only distantly.
